CLUES are a 5 piece band from Portsmouth who have been busy building a fanbase and getting their debut EP recorded. We were lucky enough to grab an interview with them. Give it a read here:

Give us a little introduction to yourselves:

We’re CLUES and Fraser Stokes sings, Sam Coburn plays lead guitar, Craig MacVicar plays rhythm guitar, Rob Whale plays drums and Lewis Duffin plays bass. We reside in between Portsmouth and Southampton. Our debut EP ‘What’s To Come’ will be available on Spotify, iTunes etc from the 11th December so check that out. I promise it’ll be worth it.

Describe your sound in three words:

Hm, it’s always difficult answering these types of questions. Maybe just the three genres we probably fit into the most, so Garage/Indie/Punk.

You formed in 2015, what’s the best thing you’ve done as a band so far?

Well so far we’ve not really done loads, we’ve been quite quiet really. I think recording our whole EP in one recording session is something we’re all rather proud of – and we saw creating that raw element quite essential to the sound we want. We didn’t want to spend days in a studio making sure every note was perfect, that wouldn’t be CLUES.

Where do you see yourself this time next year?

Hopefully, if all goes to plan, we’ll be playing a few dates around the UK and perhaps playing a few smaller festivals. I definitely think our main priority for next year is gaining a big local following because I suppose that’s essential to move onto the next level as such.

If you could support one band, dead or alive, who would it be?

I think that would have to be The Clash.

How has the reception been to your live shows? I seem to remember a stage invasion at The Talking Heads, Southampton…

Some bad, some really good. We really struggle to play when everyone’s stood still y’know, with our kind of sound it can make it really awkward when everybody is just stood staring at you. Yeah, The Talking Heads was a really good gig – it was exactly the reception we want from people coming to our shows.

Finally, if you could have 1 album each on a desert island, what would it be?

Fraser: Bob Dylan – Nashville Skyline

Lewis: The Velvet Underground self titled

Rob: Elliot Smith – Either/or

Sam: ABBA – Gold

Craig: The Stone Roses self titled

Here’s some dates for the next few months that CLUES are playing, try and pop along if you’re free:

  • 10th December – The Joiners, Southampton
  • 7th January – The Talking Heads, Southampton
  • 8th January – The Joiners, Southampton
  • 12th February – The Alexandra Beer Emporium, Southampton
